Verb of the Month

When I was at InformationWeek, we used to joke about "the search for the perfect verb" when writing headlines (and news stories).

Verbs are everything. But finding an interesting one that wasn't too weird was hard.

Today's Wall Street Journal, above the logo:

                 "Aid Delays Augur Deeper Suffering"

How's THAT for a verb?

Ooh, I don't like that headline. Not necessarily because of 'augur' but because of 'Aid delays'. 'Aid' could be a noun or verb, as could 'delays', so it took me two or three glances to get the sense of the headline. I read it initially as 'Aid' (subject) 'delays' (verb) 'augur deeper suffering' (object). What?!

It may just be because it's Friday and I'm being slow.
