I left my desk to do something, and forgot what it was.
"Oh, well," I said, "it'll reoccur to me."
The next day, my daughter said, "Oh, Mom . . . I was going to ask you something, and I forgot what it was."
"Don't worry," I said, "it'll reoccur to you."
Things occur to us; they come to mind.
But if they leave, couldn't they come back--the same thought? Of course--so why don't we generally say, "it reoccurred to me"?
Oh, people use that term--I got 43 (or 27, depending) Ghits (EggcornDatabase speak for Google hits)
Why *don't* we use "reoccur" in that manner?
And why *do* we use "recur" (to come again to mind)? That's just silly.
I find it physically difficult to say 'reoccur'. Try as I might, it just comes out as 'recur'...
ReplyDeleteYour post has made me think of a different question: Is there a word that means "going somewhere and then forgetting why you went there"? If there isn't, there should be, if only so I can use it.
